Jonathan Wilson is the prize-winning recipient of the 2014 Iowa Music Teachers Association composition competition. He will begin his second year as a doctoral student studying music composition with David Gompper at the University of Iowa in August. Originally from Wonder Lake, Illinois, Jonathan received his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in music composition from Western Illinois University. He has studied music composition with Lawrence Fritts, James Romig, James Caldwell, Paul Paccione, and John Cooper. In addition to composition, Jonathan has studied conducting under Richard Hughey and Mike Fansler. His compositional process tends to follow a concept-oriented approach, which generates the structural ideas for his works. His future plans are to complete his doctoral program in music composition and to secure a teaching job in the field at a university. Jonathan is a member of the Society of Composers, Inc., the Iowa Composers Forum, and the American Composers Forum.
