Red Cedar Chamber Music (proposals due June 3)

Call for proposals

Red Cedar Chamber Music requests proposals for settings of folk music for violin & cello duo. We are looking for music from around the world. The general parameters are flexible but we envision pairs or small sets of folk music with a total length of 4 – 7 minutes. Despite the Euro-centric examples we have linked below, we would love to have settings of folk songs from less well-represented countries/cultures.

Proposals should include the title of selections, a concept for the setting
(traditional, abstract, polytonal, etc), any relevant cultural context, and
proposed length. Proposals may include links to work samples, media demonstrating a selection or style, a draft, or completed work.

Successful proposals will result in a commission which will pay up to $1,000. Initial performances (up to 20) would be in Eastern Iowa September-October 2022 on a program titled FRESH FOLK.

This is an ongoing call for proposals. The initial deadline for works to be premiered in the fall of 2022 is June 3. Composers will be notified by June 15, with a deadline for commissioned works August 1. We will commission 4 to 5 works in the first round and may commission subsequent works over the next few seasons.

Proposals and any questions should be directed to Carey Bostian, Artistic Director
