Competitions
In February, the Iowa Composers Forum announced the winners of its 12th annual Student Composers Competition. The Forum is working to coordinate performances of the 1st and 2nd place pieces in each category at a 10 am concert on April 7th at the UNI Festival. The winners in each category will receive a savings bond ranging from $50 to $200.
Clayton Dryden, a second grader from Marion, IA won the competition?s Elementary Division for his composition River, Come. Clayton is a student of Matt Wheeler.

First prize in the Junior High Division went to Danielle Orihuela, an eighth grade student of Bonnie Johansen-Werner, for her work Flute Sonata. Katie Mallon, another eighth grader, was awarded second place in the Junior Division for her composition Voices of the Past. Two honorable mentions were awarded in the junior high division to Emilee Droegmiller and Cheyanne Porter—both students of Denise Knaack.

Michael Gilbertson is certainly no stranger to the annual composition competition. The Dubuque composer received first prize in the Senior High Division for his work Overture for Orchestra. Michael studies with Tracey Rush. Matt Wheeler, another steady contender in the annual competition, received second prize in the Senior Division for his clarinet and piano work titled Postcards from Chicago. Matt, a Hiawatha resident, studies composition with Joseph Dangerfield. Philip Bergman, an 11th grader, received an honorable mention award in this division for his String Quartet No. 1.

In the newly added College Division, three awards were presented. First place went to Cedar Rapids composer Luke Gullickson for his composition Four Preludes for Piano. Luke currently studies with David Vayo at Illinois Wesleyan University. Jennifer Edmondson, of Ames, was the recipient of the second place award for Duo. Jennifer studies with Christopher Hopkins at Iowa State University. JoAnna Cochenet, a student of Michael Kimber, earned an honorable mention in the college division.

A hearty congratulations to all of the participants! We look forward to hearing your works at the festival!
