Muscatine Symphony Orchestra Commission

Competitions
Postmark Deadline: January 24, 2008

The Muscatine Symphony Orchestra is interested in commissioning a new and substantial work from an Iowa Composer for their orchestra to premiere during its 2009-10 concert season. The commission amount will be between $5,000 and $10,000 (depending on the number of grants that can be secured) and the desired length of the work will be approximately 20 minutes. The selected composer will create several short movements influenced by the photography of Oscar Grossheim. The composer will be notified by March 1, 2009 and the work will need to be completed by September 1, 2009.

The Muscatine Symphony is a community-based orchestra, which brings in a handful of professional players the weekend of the performance. The orchestra typically performs with the following ensemble – strings - 66554; winds - 3232, brass - 4231; perc – timp + 1 or 2. The orchestra performs at a level similar to that of an orchestra at a smaller undergraduate institution, so composers may want to submit a piece that demonstrates an understanding of writing for an orchestra at this level. The symphony has requested that only composers who are residents of the state of Iowa apply for this opportunity. If you are interested in being considered for this tremendous opportunity, please submit one or two orchestra scores, recordings (if available), a cover letter listing contact information, and a brief biography to:
