The Iowa Composers Forum has awarded the 2007-08 Etzel College Scholarship to Kevin Plattner, a student at Grinnell College.
Mr. Plattner, in his third year at the school, received the $500 award for
his composition Anemone Waltz.

As a relative newcomer to the art of composing, Plattner was pleasantly surprised to learn that he had won the scholarship. His winning work, a quartet for clarinets, ?cello and vibraphone, was submitted as the final project for an Introductory to Composition class.

The Iowa City resident chose Grinnell because of it support of cross-disciplinary studies and its exceptional faculty in the three fields he cares about - art, music, and mathematics. Currently, he?s studying composition with Grinnell college faculty member Eric McIntyre.

So, what does the future hold? Plattner is considering graduate school in electroacoustic composition and multi-media art. A psychedelic folk band he started with his girlfriend, is a distinct possibility as well.

For Plattner, the future looks bright indeed!

The Etzel College Scholarship is awarded annually to help students study composition at an Iowa College or University. The scholarship was funded by a generous donation by composer and pianist Marilynn Etzel, of Marion. Mrs. Etzel hopes that the scholarship will provide encouragement for Iowa students to create new music.
