<title>Student Composition Contest Winners Honored</title>

<description>The Iowa Composers Forum sponsored the 14th Student Composition Contest with the performances and awards being presented at the Festival held in Decorah, IA February 4 -5, 2012.

In the Elementary Division the first place cash prize of $25 was awarded to Tess Spesia. Tess is a student of Bonnie Johansen-Werner. He piece entitled Mysterious Night was written for piano with extended techniques.

In the Middle School Division the first place cash prize of $25 was awarded to Roberto Gemignani. Roberto is a student of Jeffery Prater. His piano piece is entitled Trafalger. Second place in the Middle School Division was awarded to Clayton Dryden, a student of Ralph Kendrick. His composition is entitled Spontaneous String Quartet. Also in the Middle School Division Eliot Barker was awarded Honorable Mention for his orchestral piece Suite. Eliot is the student of Matt Wheeler.

In the College Division the first place cash prize of $100 was awarded to Mitchell Dietz. Mitchell is a student of Brooke Joyce. His piece is entitled Trio for flute, oboe, and clarinet. Second place in the College Division was awarded to Joseph Carey, also a student of Brooke Joyce. Joseph’s piece is a violin solo entitled hanamidori.

Congratulations to all of our participants and their instructors. The Iowa Composers Forum prides itself for supporting youth in their efforts of composition. Guidelines for the 15th contest will soon be released.</description>

<description>On October 15-17 Iowa State University Department of Music and Theatre and the Iowa Composers Forum (ICF) will host a Fall Festival of New Music featuring chamber, electroacoustic, wind ensemble, and choral music by composer members of the ICF from Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Texas. The festival will include three concerts on Friday and Saturday featuring works by ICF members, and an Iowa State Singers concert on Sunday afternoon which will include a work by an ICF member. The composers of each ICF work will be in attendance and will introduce their piece to the audience. In addition, there will be a concert Friday evening featuring guest composer Elainie Lillios (Bowling Green State University of Ohio) sponsored by the C. Buell Lipa Festival for Contemporary Music at Iowa State University.</description>

<description>On May 22, 2010, the Iowa Composers Forum will host A Cedar Rapids Festival of New Music featuring chamber and choral music of 21 living composers from Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Michigan performed by members of Orchestra Iowa. The festival will include free concerts at 11 am and 4 pm at West Music in Marion, and an 8 pm concert at Lovely Lane United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.  Tickets for the Lovely Lane concert are $8 and may be purchased at the door.</description>

The festival will also include an evening concert of chamber music by eight ICF members at the Methwick Retirement Community Center.</description>
