Carl Orff Competition (February 28)

February 28

The composition should contain an excerpt from the poem ”Orpheus.Eurydice.Hermes” by Rainer Maria Rilke.  In the poem, Orpheus leads his beloved Eurydice in the company of the God Hermes out of the underworld.  The plan can only succeed if he doesn’t turn around to her.  Otherwise, Eurydice will not be permitted to leave the underworld.

It is required that the work be written for a solo baritone (alternatively a solo soprano), harp (alternatively piano) and a frame drum.  The singer should be able to play the frame drum.  The work should be between 4 and 6 minutes in duration.  Sculptures by Antje Tesche-Mentzen should serve as a source of inspiration,

Ten nominated composers are provided travel expenses (irrespective where they come from), as well as two overnight stays in company with one individual at the ”Fleming-Hotel” in Munich.  Additionally, the three best performances at the final concert will be awarded 5,000.00, 3,000.00 and 2,000.00 Euros respectively.
