Iowa Composers Forum

Community Orchestra Commission Project (January 1)

The Iowa Composers Forum is excited to announce a new commissioning opportunity in conjunction with the Fort Dodge Area Symphony (www.fdsymphony.org), the Cherokee Symphony (www.cherokeesymphony.org) and the Oneota Valley Community Orchestra (www.ovcorchestra.org).

For the 2018-19 season, each of these groups will feature a new work by an ICF member, composed specifically for these two orchestras in collaboration with their music directors.

Process:
All ICF members in good standing are invited to submit a portfolio of not more than 2 pieces that represent their best work. They need not be for large ensemble. Scores should be accompanied by recordings (no midi realizations, please).

Scores and recordings should not bear the name of the composer nor contain any identifying marks.

Additionally, composers are asked to submit a letter of introduction, which should include a brief program note for each submitted composition, along with a current resume or CV.

The two music directors will review the submissions and choose a single composer to commission for the 2018-19 season.

Scores, recordings, letter and resume/CV are due via e-mail by January 1, 2018, to the address below. Scores, letter, and resume/CV should be in pdf format. Recordings may be submitted in mp3 format if under 10MB; if over 10MB, please submit links rather than files.

The selected composer will be notified around February 1, 2018. A contract will then be written that details payment schedule, deadlines, and scope of the new work. The new work will be premiered by all three orchestras during the 2018-19 season. Additionally, all orchestras will seek to program an additional work by the commissioned composer during the season.

The commission fee will be at least $750, with additional funding contingent on successful grant applications.
